One of my favourite things about Ghyll House is the walk to Ilkley, one of the best you can do straight from the tent. It’s about 40 minutes each way — nothing too taxing, and the views over Wharfedale make every step worth it.
We’re set on Addingham Moorside, right on the edge of Ilkley Moor, so you step off the campsite and almost immediately you’re on open moorland. On a clear morning you can see for miles — across the valley towards Beamsley Beacon and Great Whernside in the distance. It’s the kind of view that makes you very glad you’re camping in Yorkshire.

What to expect on the walk to Ilkley
The walk to Ilkley is well-marked and suits most fitness levels. Ilkley itself is a lovely spa town with a good choice of cafés, tea rooms and things to do — perfect for a proper sit-down breakfast or a pot of tea before the walk back up. If you’re feeling adventurous, the famous Cow and Calf Rocks are well worth a detour too.
We’ve had guests do this walk with young children, with dogs, and even with grandparents — and everyone comes back glowing. There’s something about the moor air that does you the world of good. Our own farm dogs sometimes tag along as far as the gate, as if they fancy the idea but think better of it.
If you’re planning a stay, I’d really recommend building this walk into your first morning. Set off early while it’s still cool, stop for a brew in Ilkley, and wander back up at your own pace. You’ll have earned a sit-down by the time you get back to the campsite.

And if you fancy something longer up on the tops, our walk to the Swastika Stone heads the other way along the moor.
